Selective facts

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion; however they are not entitled to their own set of facts. Larry Damon of El Cerrito's letter (January 15th) stated as fact that reading Miranda rights to the Christmas Day underwear bomber stops the suspect from being interrogated, and that President Barack Obama waited too long (three days) to speak Bulova Fake out about the incident.

Reading Miranda rights to the underwear bomber does nothing to prevent the suspect from talking with investigators. It only lets him know in advance that what he says can be used in court.

The underwear bomber is eerily similar to Richard Reid, the shoe bomber, who tried to blow up a plane during the George Bush presidency. Bush waited six days to speak about that case, and he wisely left it to law enforcement (not the military) to carry through. The result? Reid was convicted in a court of law and he is in jail.

embroidered patches Obama did not rush to the microphone on Christmas Day; he gave investigators a chance to determine what the facts were. This is not a sign of weakness; it is level-headed action that will lead to a coordinated effort to keep us safe.
